NDRRMC: Death toll from Typhoon Gener climbs to 7


The death toll in the wake of Typhoon Gener (Saola) rose to seven early Tuesday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said.
 
In its 6 a.m. update, the NDRRMC said the latest fatalities were from Cavite in Southern Luzon and Zamboanga del Norte province in Mindanao.
 
Among the recent fatalities were:
 
  • Merly Datinginoo, 45, of Brgy. Gamao, Tingloy, Batangas, drowned;
  • Danieles Hipolito, 32 to 35, from Bacoor in Cavite, electrocuted while crossing a bridge in Panapaan village in Bacoor, Cavite;
  • Reynante Lingasad Jr., 10, Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte, drowned while swimming with his family at Galas Beach Resort in Dipolog.
 
Earlier reported killed were Ronald Necor, 33; Ernesto Flores, 60; Bernard Buzon, 35; and Teodoro Flores, 40, of Laguna who was hit by a falling coconut tree.
 
At least three people were reported injured, including:
 
  • Edger Vecimo, chief cook of MV Shuttle RORO; and
  • Ezekiel Calubaguib and Rona del Ramos, figured in motorcycle accident in Ifugao due to rockslides.
 
On the other hand, eight were rescued, including three fishermen at the back of the Senate building in Pasay City and five passengers of a motorized banca that capsized in Pagkilatan in Batangas.
 
 
Earlier in the day, state weather forecasters said Gener maintained its slow pace northward even as flash floods and landslides threaten parts of Luzon and Visayas, which have been saturated after days of heavy rain. The NDRRMC said Gener affected 8,298 families or 40,477 people in 94 villages in 25 towns and 13 cities in 14 provinces.
 
Of these, 1,752 families or 8,016 people are being served in 30 evacuation centers.
 
Roads, bridges
 
The NDRRMC said seven roads, one dike and seven bridges were closed. These include:
 
  • 3 bridges in Cagayan, 1 bridge in Isabela
  • 1 road in Zambales
  • 1 road in Batangas
  • 1 bridge, 1 road in Palawan
  • 1 bridge, 1 dike in Aklan
  • 1 bridge in Camiguin
  • 2 roads in Benguet
  • 1 road in Mountain Province
  • 1 road in Ifugao
 
Power outage
 
Electrical power went out in Mariveles, Bataan at 1 a.m. Monday, but was restored at 4 p.m.
 
A power outage was also experienced in the second and third districts of Negros Oriental due to toppled transmission lines. Power was restored at 7:45 p.m. — RSJ, GMA News
