Stormy weather prompts class suspensions in NCR, nearby provinces


(Updated 3:36 p.m.) -  Heavy rain and strong winds brought by the southwest monsoon early Wednesday prompted the suspension of classes in more areas in Metro Manila.
 
Officials of Marikina, Pasay, Mandaluyong, San Juan and Quezon Cities announced before 6 a.m. the suspension of classes up to the high school level.
 
"We cannot sacrifice the health and safety of our children," Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista said in an interview on dzBB radio.
 
He said classes in Quezon City were suspended from preschool to high school, public and private.
 
Navotas City also suspended classes up to high school, as well as Navotas Polytechnic College, according to Mayor John Rey Tiangco.
 
In Marikina City, dzBB's Glen Juego quoted vice mayor Jose Cadiz as saying classes up to high school in public and private schools were suspended.
 
In Pasay City, Mayor Antonio Calixto's chief of staff Albert Paredes said they decided to suspend classes only in public schools up to the high school level.
 
"Ang private may kakayahan magdala ng gamit para protektahan ang sarili," he said.
 
In Mandaluyong City, dzBB's Glen Juego reported Mayor Benhur Abalos announced the suspension of classes in public and private schools up to high school level.
 
Classes were similarly suspended in San Juan City. In Manila, Mayor Alfredo Lim said the suspension of classes up to the high school level will take effect at noon, radio dzBB's Carlo Mateo reported. In Makati, afternoon classes from preschool to high school were suspended for both private and public schools, according to an advisory on the city's official Twitter account
Classes remained suspended in some schools in Valenzuela City, according to a dzBB report. Classes are suspended in Rincon Elementary School, Pasolo Elementary School, Isla Elementary School, Tagalag Elementary School, Coloong Elementary School, Wawang Pulo Elementary School, Pio Valenzuela Elementary School, A. Deato Elementary School and P.R. San Diego Elementary School in Valenzuela, according to a report on News to Go.
 
Also suspended were classes in Dampalit 1 Elementary School and Dampalit Main Elementary School in Malabon City, dzBB added.
 
NCR private schools
 
Private schools in Metro Manila also suspended classes for the day. These include:
  • Adamson University (work and classes from 12:00 noon)
  • Ateneo de Manila University, up to high school level

  • City College of Manila (afternoon classes)

Bulacan
 
The Department of Education tweeted classes were suspended in Bocaue, Marilao, and Ubihan Elementary School and Zamora Elementary School in Meycauayan West.
Classes in Obando town remained suspended Wednesday, the Department of Education also said on its Twitter account.  
 
"Obando, Bulacan: Classes in all levels will remain suspended (on) Aug 1, due to high tide," it said.
 
Classes in Obando were suspended since Monday due to heavy rain brought by the monsoon enhanced by now-typhoon "Gener." DepEd also announced that classes were suspended in Angat for all levels in both public and private schools, and Meycauayan East (Saluysoy only).
 
Cavite
 
In Cavite, dzBB's Sam Nielsen reported classes were suspended up to the high school level in Naic, Ternate, and Imus towns, and in Bacoor City.
 
But in Rosario, Cavite, classes were suspended up to the college level in both private and public schools. Pampanga In Guagua, Pampanga, classes were suspended for all levels in public and private high schools, a report on News to Go said.
Rizal  
The DepEd also said classes in Rodriguez town were suspended. Zambales   In Zambales, classes were also suspended for the elementary level in Cawag High School Annex, Nagyantok High School, Cawag Resettlement High School and San Isidro High School, a report on News to Go said. Afternoon classes were also suspended in Olongapo City for elementary to high school levels in both public and private schools, DepEd said on Twitter.   La Union   Mayor Pablo Ortega suspended classes for all levels in San Fernando, La Union, according to a report on Unang Hirit. –ELR/KG/CGL, GMA News
