PAGASA: Potential cyclone approaching PHL intensifies

A potential cyclone approaching the country intensified into an active low-pressure area before noon Saturday, with state weather forecasters saying its chances of becoming a cyclone have increased. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said this as it noted the southwest monsoon has weakened, but will still bring cloudy skies and scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over parts of Luzon. “At 10:00 a.m., the [active] low-pressure area (ALPA) has become active and was estimated at 1,280 km east of Central Luzon (but is) still too far to affect any part of the country within the next 24 hours,” PAGASA said in its 11 a.m. advisory. PAGASA forecaster Jori Loiz, in an interview on “Balitanghali,” said they expect the ALPA to enter the Philippine area of responsibility in 12 hours. If the ALPA becomes a cyclone while inside Philippine territory, it will be locally codenamed “Helen.” “Lumalaki na ang chance nito maging isang bagyo (Its chances of becoming a cyclone have strengthened),” Loiz said. He also said there is a chance the weather disturbance will enhance the southwest monsoon, which may bring heavy rain. Meanwhile, PAGASA said the southwest monsoon may bring mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Northern and Central Luzon. These rain showers and thunderstorms may particularly along the provinces of Ilocos, La Union, Pangasinan, Zambales, Pampanga, Bataan, Tarlac and Bulacan, it said. — LBG, GMA News
