VP Binay to represent PNoy at Iran summit on Aug 28

Vice President Jejomar Binay will represent President Benigno Aquino III at the 16th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit in Tehran in Iran. Binay will leave for Tehran on Tuesday, the day Aquino and other Cabinet members take part in a state funeral for the late Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo. "While in Iran, the Vice President will also visit the Philippine embassy's welfare center and is also expected to attend the official lunch to be hosted by his Excellency Mahmood Ahmadi Nejad, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, for summit delegates," read an entry posted on Binay's Facebook page Sunday noon. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is to attend the summit where NAM member-states and associated observer countries will also be represented. NAM, founded in September 1961, is comprised of 120 countries, apart from 19 observer countries and 10 observer organizations. The NAM seeks to promote the interests of developing countries all over the world, and represents nearly two-thirds of UN member-countries. It also comprises 55 percent of the world's population, the Office of the vice President noted. — LBG, GMA News
