NDRRMC: 3,828 stranded, 3 flights canceled due to Typhoon Lawin


At least 3,828 passengers in Bicol and Visayas were stranded Sunday due to bad weather conditions brought by Typhoon Lawin (Jelawat), the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said Sunday evening. In its 6 p.m. update, the NDRRMC cited figures as of Sunday noon that showed most of the stranded were from Matnog Port in Sorsogon with 1,905 and Balwarteco in Allen in Northern Samar with 1,413. The NDRRMC said another 510 were stranded in Dapdap as well. Another 22 rolling cargoes in Cebu; 96 in Balwarteco and 40 in Dapdap were also stranded as of noon, it added. Balwarteco and Dapdap are in Allen, Northern Samar. Port operations in Pilar and Bulan in Sorsogon; and in Maasin, Liloan and San Ricardo in Southern Leyte resumed operations Sunday morning. At least three flights were canceled: - 5J-703, Manila to Dipolog - 5J-704, Dipolog to Manila - 5J-914, Caticlan to Manila Four dams kept their gates open as of 3 p.m.: Angat and Ipo in Bulacan; Binga Dam in Benguet; and Magat Dam in the Ifugao-Isabela area. Malacañang sought understanding from the stranded passengers, saying authorities barred their vessels from leaving for their own safety. “'Yan hinihingi ang pagunawa. Nag-suspend ang Coast Guard ng sea travel sa area na may public storm warning signal,” deputy Palace spokesperson Abigail Valte said on government-run dzRB radio.
