PAGASA: Storm Nina, new LPA may bring rain to parts of Luzon

Aside from Tropical Storm Nina (Prapiroon), some parts of Luzon may have to brace for rain from a new low-pressure area spotted east of Quezon province.   PAGASA forecaster Nikos Peñaranda said the LPA may start bringing rain to the area later Monday, even as he said Nina may not bring as much rain as the cyclones before it.   In its 11 a.m. advisory, PAGASA said the LPA was estimated 340 km east of Infanta, Quezon and may bring "occasional light to moderate rain or thunderstorms over Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, CALABARZON and Bicol Region.”   Peñaranda also said their forecast models show Tropical Storm Nina may make a U-turn and head for Japan by Thursday or Friday.   "Sa kanyang nasasaklawan na area [magiging maulan], pero sa kanyang distansya wala itong mahihila na habagat," Peñaranda said in an interview on dzBB radio on Monday.   He said rain over Visayas and Mindanao may be expected, but this is due to the Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ).   On the other hand, Peñaranda said the northeast windflow over Taiwan and Batanes may cause big waves in the seaboards of Northern Luzon.   PAGASA's 11 a.m. advisory said Nina was estimated at 1,260 km east of Cagayan as of 10 a.m., with maximum sustained winds of 75 kph near the center and gustiness of up 90 kph. It was moving west at 9 kph and is expected to be 1,070 km east of Cagayan Tuesday morning, and 850 km east of Aparri, Cagayan Wednesday morning.   By Thursday morning it is expected to be 760 km east of Calayan Island, Cagayan.   PAGASA said Nina may bring rainfall of 5 to 10 mm per hour (moderate to heavy) within its 500-km diameter.   PAGASA said Palawan and Visayas will have occasional light to moderate rains or thunderstorms due to the ITCZ. — KBK, GMA News
