Hero dog 'Kabang' on way to USA for operation

Kabang, the hero dog that lost her snout and upper jaw while saving two children in Zamboanga in December 2011, flew to the United States Monday night for a life-saving operation.

The hero dog was allowed to walk around the airport before being placed in a dog carrier aboard a Philippine Airlines flight Monday night, according to a report by Dano Tingcungco on GMA News' 24 Oras.

While she saved the girls by jumping into the path of the tricycle, she got hit and lost her snout and upper jaw.

A motorcade accompanied Kabang to the airport Monday.

The 24 Oras report said Kabang may undergo skin grafting to reconstruct her snout, which doctors said filters dust and germs and keeps them from her lungs.

Doctors were also quoted in the report as saying Kabang needs the surgery as she had been taking antibiotics for 10 months, and her liver and kidney may no longer handle the medicines.

The surgery is to be held at the University of California Davis (UC Davis) Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. — RSJ, GMA News
