No stormy weather in PHL as Typhoon Nina heads north

Typhoon Nina (Prapiroon) intensified and began to crawl slowly northward Friday, even as state weather forecasters said it will not cause any stormy weather in any part of the Philippines.

PAGASA forecaster Elvie Enriquez said their models indicate that Typhoon Nina, because of its slow movement, may leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Monday.

"Pausad-usad ito, nasa PAR pa ito. Maaaring by Monday paalis na ito, napakabagal," Enriquez said in an interview on dzBB radio.
Predicted track for Typhoon Nina as of October 12
'Won't directly affect PHL'

"Nina has intensified further but is almost stationary some 660 km east of Calayan Island as of 4 a.m. It is expected to remain a slow-moving system, heading north at just 4 kph. Still relatively far from the archipelago, Nina will not directly affect the country," explained GMA resident meteorologist Nathaniel "Mang Tani" Cruz.

"However, the Cordillera Administrative Region; southern parts of Luzon; the whole of Visayas; and the northern part of Mindanao will experience occasional moderate to heavy rainshowers and thunderstorms associated with Nina's trough and southwest wind flow," Mang Tani added.

High waves but no stormy weather

"Bagama't malayo si Nina nagkakaepekto ito sa maglalayag, lalo ang may maliit na sasakyang pandagat hanggang Quezon, Bicol at Samar," Enriquez said.

Still, Enriquez said Filipinos can be thankful that Nina's movements are such that it is not causing stormy weather in any part of the country.

Earlier, Enriquez had said cyclones at this time of the year are compact and are likely to make landfall.

"Buti na lang ganito kilos ni Nina, malaking pasalamat natin niyan (It is good that Nina is moving this way. We should be thankful)," she said.

PAGASA's 5 a.m. bulletin showed that as of 4 a.m., Nina was estimated at 660 km east of Calayan Island, Cagayan, with maximum sustained winds of 160 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 195 kph.

It said Nina is forecast to move north at 4 kph.

"The Cordlillera Administrative Region, Mindoro, Palawan, Cavite, Batangas, the Bicol Region, the whole Visayas, the Zamboanga Peninsula and Northern Mindanao will be cloudy with occassional moderate to heavy rain showers and thunderstorms," it said.

PAGASA said Metro Manila and the rest of the country will be partly cloudy with brief rain showers or thunderstorms.

Moderate to strong winds blowing from the north to northwest will prevail over Luzon and from the west to southwest over the rest of the country.

The coastal waters throughout the archipelago will be moderate to rough.

Meanwhile, strong to gale force winds may affect the northern and western seaboards of Northern Luzon and the eastern seaboard of Luzon and Visayas.

"Fishing boats and other small seacrafts are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves," PAGASA said. — TJD, GMA News
