Filipino Muslims offer prayers, songs in peace vigil

Filipino Muslims and peace advocates, some of whom traveled to Manila from as far away as Mindanao, offered songs and prayers in a peace vigil at the Mendiola Bridge near Malacañang from Sunday night to early Monday.

The vigil was dubbed "Salubong at Harana para sa Kapayapaan", radio dzBB's Rodil Vega reported.

Participants braved the early morning chill in the vigil, which was in support of the signing of a framework peace agreement between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

Negotiators of both sides are to sign the framework agreement at 1:30 p.m. in Malacañang. The agreement aims to replace the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao with a new political entity called Bangsamoro.

The peace pilgrims arrived Sunday afternoon after days of traveling in the “Lakbay Kalinaw Caravan (Peace Travel Caravan)” from Mindanao.

The MILF said that participants in the caravan included grassroots leaders from Moro, Christian, and indigenous communities in Mindanao.

Meanwhile, police heightened security in Metro Manila for the agreement signing.

Metro Manila police officials said that, while there is no intelligence chatter regarding a security threat, the heightened alert is standard operating procedure, dzBB's Tuesday Niu reported. — DVM, GMA News
