PAGASA: Weather disturbance off Mindanao may cause flash floods, landslides

A low-pressure area off Mindanao may bring bad weather conditions that may cause flash floods and landslides in parts of Eastern Visayas and Mindanao, state weather forecasters said before noon Sunday. In its 11 a.m. advisory, PAGASA said the low-pressure area was estimated at 350 km east of Davao Oriental as of 10 a.m. Sunday. "This weather system is expected to bring moderate to heavy rain (5.0 to 15.0 mm per hour) and thunderstorms in Bicol Region, Visayas and Mindanao particularly over the Eastern Visayas, Cagara Region, Northern Mindanao and Zamboanga Del Norte which may trigger flash floods and landslides," it said. It advised residents in those areas to take all the necessary precautionary measures. Earlier, PAGASA forecaster Glaiza Escollar said the LPA is not likely to become a cyclone in the next 24 hours. But PAGASA said that if the LPA becomes a cyclone, it will be codenamed "Pablo," the 16th cyclone in the Philippine Area of Responsibility so far this year. — LBG, GMA News
