'Pablo' continues to slow, may exit PAR by Friday

Typhoon Pablo (Bopha) slowed down further Wednesday afternoon but maintained its strength, even as state weather forecasters expect it to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Friday morning.

PAGASA forecaster Bernie de Leon said the weather conditions in Visayas and Mindanao, which Typhoon Pablo pounded this week, should continue to improve.

"Gumaganda na ang panahon sa malaking bahagi ng Mindanao at Visayas ... Friday morning inaashan natin nasa labas na ng PAR natin (Weather conditions in the Visayas and Mindanao are improving. By Friday morning we expect Typhoon Pablo to be outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility)," radio dzBB's Roland Bola quoted de Leon as saying.
Improving weather
He also said they expect the weather in Palawan to improve starting Thursday.

Also, he said that while there is a chance the typhoon may recurve and affect Southern and Central Luzon, such chances are very slim.

"Posibleng mangyari pero maliit ang chance (Recurving is possible but the chance of that is very small)," he said.

PAGASA's 5 p.m. bulletin said Typhoon Pablo maintained its strength and was estimated at 110 km northwest of Roxas, Northern Palawan as of 4 p.m.

It said Typhoon Pablo packed maximum sustained winds of 120 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 150 kph.

The typhoon was moving west-northwest at 15 kph and is expected to be 510 km west of San Jose, Occidental Mindoro Thursday afternoon.

By Friday afternoon it is expected to be 700 km west of Subic, Zambales, or outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

Storm signals

Under Storm Signal No. 3 are Northern Palawan and the Calamian Group of Islands.

Under Storm Signal No. 2 is the rest of Palawan.

Under Signal No. 1 is Occidental Mindoro.

PAGASA said Typhoon Pablo may bring rainfall of 10 to 18 mm per hour (heavy to intense) within its 400-km diameter.

It reminded residents in low-lying and mountainous areas under public storm warning signals to be alert against possible flash floods and landslides.

Also, it said those living in coastal areas under public storm warning signals 2 and 3 are alerted against big waves or storm surges.
