DepEd: Registration for public schools for next school year is on Jan. 26

Elementary and high school students nationwide can register early for School Year 2013-2014 on January 26, the Department of Education said.

The DepEd said the early registration for all public elementary and secondary schools aims to achieve universal completion of basic education.

“We want to make the June school opening as smooth as possible and as universally participated in as possible, that is why we are doing the preparation as early as January,” DepEd Secretary Armin Luistro said in a press release.

He said the early registration aims to bring all school-aged children to school and the out-of-school youth back to the classrooms.

Citing DepEd Order No. 89 issued in 2012, the DepEd said January 26 is Early Registration Day for school year 2013-2014.

The DepEd said the registration aims to ensure five-year olds' enrolment in kindergarten and six-year-olds' registration for Grade 1.

It also aims to benefit out-of-school children and youths from disadvantaged groups, including street children aged 5 to 18.

Luistro said these out-of-school youths and street children will get their preferred education delivery system, which could be formal through alternative delivery mode (ADM) or alternative learning system (ALS).

The DepEd said the early registration will also let it work closely with local government units, Parent-Teachers Associations, barangay officials, civil society groups, civic organizations, and the business sector.

“We are enlisting the assistance of local and barangay officials for the early registration of out-of-school children (OSC) and out-of-school youth (OSY), those with difficulty in learning and the indigenous peoples (IPs),” Luistro said. —KG, GMA News
