Cold mornings to last until March; Rainy Tuesday expected

The cold mornings being experienced in the country may last until early March due to the northeast monsoon, state weather forecasters said Tuesday.

PAGASA forecaster Manny Mendoza said that, while temperatures will likely start warming up after February, the northeast monsoon may still bring cold mornings and occasional rain until March.

"Very persistent ang ating hanging amihan. Winter ngayon sa north hemisphere, ang lamig ng yelo sa Siberia sa Northern China dinadala ng amihan sa Pilipinas kaya malamig," Mendoza said in an interview on dzBB radio.

"Hanggang early March meron pa ring hanging amihan pero sa March medyo mainit ang panahon. Sa umaga medyo malamig pa rin," he added.

Meanwhile, although there is no potential cyclone within the Philippine Area of Responsibility, some parts of the country may still expect occasional light to moderate rains.

"Two weather systems are now triggering rainy weather conditions in the archipelago.  The first is the tail end of a cold front affecting Eastern Visayas. The second system is the northeast monsoon affecting Eastern Luzon," said GMA resident meteorologist Nathaniel "Mang Tani" Cruz. "Cloudy skies with occasional light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms will prevail today in Samar-Leyte area including central Visayas and the whole of Mindanao. In Eastern Luzon, there will be occasional light rains today —including Cagayan Valley, Quezon and Aurora provinces and the Bicol region as well as Palawan," he added.

PAGASA's 5 a.m. bulletin said the tail-end of a cold front is affecting Eastern Visayas while the northeast monsoon is affecting Eastern Luzon.

"Samar and Leyte provinces, Central Visayas and Mindanao will have cloudy skies with occasional light to moderate rain showers or thunderstorms," it said.

Bicol, Cagayan Valley and Aurora, Quezon and Palawan provinces will experience cloudy skies with occasional light rain.

Metro Manila and the rest of the country will be partly cloudy with brief rain showers or thunderstorms.

PAGASA also said moderate to strong winds blowing from the northeast will prevail over Luzon and its coastal waters will be moderate to rough.

Elswhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the northeast with slight to moderate seas.

Gale warning

Meanwhile, PAGASA said strong to gale force winds associated with the northeast monsoon may affect the seaboards of Northern and Central Luzon and the eastern seaboard of Southern Luzon.

"Fishing boats and other small seacrafts are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves," it said. — TJD, GMA News
