Floods from TD Crising prompt class suspensions in Mindanao

Tropical Depression (TD) Crising on Tuesday caused floods and prompted the suspension of classes in several areas in Mindanao Tuesday, state-run Philippine Information Agency (PIA) reported.

 

In posts on its "Weather Watch" page on Facebook, the PIA said local officials had also ordered the preparation of evacuation centers.

 

As of 11 a.m. Tuesday, PAGASA said at least 19 areas in Mindanao had been placed under Storm Signal No. 1.

 

In Davao del Norte, the PIA said Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Monitoring Council (PDRRMC) executive officer Sonio Sanchez reported that water levels in three tributaries in Davao del Norte - including Liboganon and Saub Rivers - are starting to rise with continuous rains in the province.

 

In Tagum City, the PIA said Barangay Florida in Kapalong, Davao del Norte is flooded and impassable.

 

At the Island Garden of Samal, Mayor Aniano Antalan ordered the preparation of evacuation centers in three districts of the island city.

 

The evacuation centers include the Babak Gym in Babak District, Samal Gym in Samal District, and the Kaputian District Hall.

 

Class suspensions

 

Meanwhile, the PIA said Davao del Norte Gov. Rodolfo del Rosario declared the suspension of classes for the eight towns under Davao del Norte.

 

In Misamis Occidental, classes in pre-school, kindergarten, elementary and high school levels in Oroquieta City, Jimenez, Aloran, Lopez-Jaena and Tudela were suspended.

 

However, Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Gain Paul De Barras said only the upland high school have been suspended in Panaon. — TJD, GMA News
