GMA Network to have access to real-time election results

The Commission on Elections on Thursday has allowed GMA Network to access real-time results in the coming May 12 polls.

“The consensus is we accepted the latest letter of GMA [to connect work stations to Comelec's mirror server], so we are adopting [the letter]. We are quoting it already in our resolution," poll chairman Sixto Brillantes Jr. said after the en banc meeting.  GMA senior vice president Marissa L. Flores had requested that the network "be allowed to set up an outside data connection... minimizing the download time of raw elections results data." The resolution Brillantes referred to has yet to be released by the Comelec. The poll body, in a resolution dated March 7, 2013, had assigned online media company Rappler to be administrator of the mirror server.   The poll body will be using a three-server system in which election returns will be transmitted to the municipal board of canvassers, the poll body’s central server and the media arm, the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP).   The "transparency server" assigned to the KBP will be used as the gateway for its members and Comelec's citizens' arm for the elections to access results, just like in the 2010 polls. GMA Network is not a member of KBP.
The mirror server will replicate the data in the transparency server. Other media entities that are not members of the KBP are expected to apply for access to the mirror server as well. Brillantes assured that all servers are under Comelec control and external administrators cannot install any software to block others who have been granted access to the data.   In addition, the poll chairman, administering his first national elections, promised that there will be no delays in the transmission of election results, which will be automatically transmitted to all, "walang delays."   GMA Network, in its letter dated March 21, said its various platforms (television, radio and the web) are accessed by millions of people daily so it is imperative that it deliver information in the fastest and most comprehensive ways possible.
