6 die in Las Piñas, Caloocan and Batangas fires

Two women died while another was injured in a fire that razed their house in Las Piñas City Monday afternoon. Arson investigators said the fatalities were trapped inside the house due to the grills installed on the windows, radio dzBB's Nimfa Ravelo reported. Killed in the fire were Janette Sarmiento, 32; and Daisy Sarmiento, 72. Injured was Helen Sarmiento, 20. Initial investigation showed the fire started at the second floor of the victims' house at Champaca Street in Castillo Subdivision in Almanza I,,Las Piñas City at about 2:30 p.m. The fire was put out at 3:11 p.m. Arson investigators suspect an electrical overload caused the fire. Initial investigation showed the fire started at 9:30 p.m., shortly after the girls' mother Jocelyn, five months pregnant, went out of the house to buy something. Jocelyn said she saw the house already ablaze when she returned. Village captain Rolando Rivera said there was no electricity in the house, adding the fire may have stemmed from a gas lamp left unattended. The report said the fire spread quickly in the house as it was made of wood. Fortunately, the fire did not spread to other houses.
