Motorcade, bands kick off Brigada Eskwela school cleanup

A motorcade and music played by bands kicked off a week-long cleanup of public schools to prepare for the start of classes on June 3.

 

Education Secretary Armin Luistro led a motorcade to start the yearly "Brigada Eskwela," radio dzBB's Glen Juego reported.

 

But DepEd spokesman Tonesito Umali admitted they will need much help from parents, students and volunteers as many schools are a mess due to campaign litter.

 

During the "Brigada Eskwela," students, parents and volunteers are to repaint schoolbuildings and clean up the mess.

 

In Quezon City, dzBB's Allan Gatus reported students and parents showed up early at the Commonwealth Elementary School for a motorcade before starting to spruce up the school.

 

A procession was held at the Gregorio del Pilar Elementary School in Manila to kick off the activity, dzBB's Manny Vargas reported.

 

On the other hand, students at the Philippine School for the Deaf in Pasay City started painting classrooms early Monday morning.

 

Help in cleaning campaign mess, Palace appeals to bets

 

On Sunday, Malacañang appealed to candidates who ran in the recently concluded midterm elections to show their sense of public service by cleaning up their campaign litter, regardless of whether they won or lost.

 

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority and local government units cannot do the cleanup job alone.

 

“Kawawa ang sidewalk clearing operations team ng MMDA. Sana huwag iiwanan ang kalat,” she said on government-run dzRB radio. 

 

"Kahit hindi kayo nagwagi o kaya hindi kayo pinalad, pakita natin ang puso natin para sa public service by helping MMDA clear 'yung mga posters, tarpaulin at 'yung iba’t ibang paraphernalia na iniwan niyo mula nung huling eleksyon," she added. —KG, GMA News
