2 SAF officials sacked over deadly NPA ambush in Cagayan

Two officials of the elite Special Action Force (SAF) of the Philippine National Police have been ordered relieved from their posts following the deaths of eight SAF members in an ambush staged by communist guerillas in Cagayan province.

Senior Inspector Ronnie Albino and Superintendent Nestor Lobos will face investigation to determine if they could be held administratively liable for the incident, according to Director Carmelo Valmoria, SAF commander.

Albino was chief of the 24th Special Action Company and the direct superior of the slain policemen while Lobos was the commander of the 2nd Special Action Battalion.

Monday's ambush where seven other SAF members were injured was the bloodiest attack by communist New People's Army (NPA) rebels against the police this year.

The 15 ambushed SAF members were on their way to the Allacapan Police Station for a medical examination when they were waylaid by the rebels.

Valmoria said an improvised explosive device (IED) was planted some 30 meters away from the area where the policemen would alight the vehicle to conduct anti-ambush road security.  — KBK, GMA News
