PNoy approves amendments to revised penal code

President Benigno Aquino III has signed a new law amending articles of the Revised Penal Code to allow deductions from the sentences of jail inmates, Malacañang said Saturday.

The Presidential Communications and Operations Office said Aquino signed Republic Act 10592 last May 29, amending Articles 29, 94, 97, 98, and 99 of the Penal Code.

Article 29 of the Revised Penal Code provides that the local jail shall allow a prisoner deductions from the period of his or her sentence for good behavior:

- During the first two years of imprisonment, the prisoner may be allowed a deduction of 20 days for each month of good behavior during detention.

- During the third to fifth year of imprisonment, the prisoner shall be allowed a deduction of 23 days for each month of good behavior during detention.

- In the following years until the 10th year, the prisoner shall be allowed a deduction of 25 days for each month of good behavior during detention.

- In the 11th and successive years of his imprisonment, he shall be allowed a deduction of 30 days for each month of good behavior during detention.

"At any time during the period of imprisonment, he shall be allowed another deduction of 15 days, in addition to numbers one to four for each month of study, teaching or mentoring service time rendered," the PCOO said.

It added the law states an appeal by the accused shall not deprive him of entitlement to the allowances for good conduct.

Meanwhile, the implementing rules and regulations of the amended law will be promulgated by the justice and interior secretaries 60 days after the act is approved. — LBG, GMA News
