DOLE prepares for career guidance week in July
The Department of Labor and Employment has set a Career Guidance Week this July to help match prospective jobseekers' skills with available job opportunities.
DOLE Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said the event aims to help high school students decide what course is best for their skills.
“The observance of Career Guidance Week in all high schools starting this year is envisioned to prevent too much waste of resources in producing graduates in the tertiary level, as well as in technical vocational level who could not meet the standards for the labor market,” she said.
A DOLE news release said the event from here on "shall be held every last week of July of every academic year."
“Through this observance of [CGW], we expect hundreds of thousands of students trooping to colleges and universities in the next school year to already have a fair idea of the labor market that will gear them up towards right career choices,” she added.
She said the CGW is part of the Career Guidance Advocacy Program headed by the government's Human Development and Poverty Reduction Cluster.
“With the right knowledge about the labor market, we make our students—our future workforce—armed and ready,” Baldoz said.
CGAP, which seeks to address the job-skills mismatch problem, is implemented by:
- Department of Education
- DOLE
- Commission on Higher Education
- Department of Science and Technology
- Professional Regulations Commission
- Technical Education and Skills Development Authority
Baldoz cited DepEd Department Order No. 25 declaring the observance of CGW, which seeks to help one determine his or her career path via a "career advocacy program that defines various jobs which are considered marketable.”
Under the program, high school students from Grades 7 to 12 are required to participate, accompanied by parents or guardians, academe, and other stakeholders.
Goals
By the end of the five-day guidance week, the DOLE expects the students to gain information on:
- the qualification standards for all types of career jobs
- making informed decisions on a career choice.
It also aims to develop awareness and appreciation on the available jobs in the labor market which is in line with their needs and interests.
To prepare CGW implementers, the Professional Regulations Commission hosted a Capacity Building Seminar-Workshop for public and private guidance counselors, principals and school superintendents last June 24 and 25. — LBG, GMA News
