PAGASA: Potential cyclone nears Albay

A potential cyclone, a low-pressure area, hovered near Albay province in the Bicol Region before noon Monday, even as state weather forecasters warned of possible flash floods and landslides that may affect much of the country.

In its 11 a.m. advisory, PAGASA said the LPA was estimated at 410 km east of Legaspi City in Albay province as of 10 a.m.

It said the LPA is embedded along the Intertropical Convergence Zone mainly affecting southern Luzon, the Visayas and western Mindanao.

"Southern Luzon, Visayas and western Mindanao will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rains becoming heavy during thunderstorms which may trigger flash floods and landslides," it said.

PAGASA advised residents in these areas to "take all the necessary precautionary measures."

Earlier, PAGASA forecaster Elvie Enriquez said the LPA has a small chance of becoming a cyclone.

But should the LPA become a cyclone while inside the Philippine area of responsibility, it will be locally codenamed Isang. — RSJ, GMA News
