Comelec to barangay officials: Stay away from registration areas

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Sunday reminded barangay officials not to go inside registration centers during the 10-day sign up for the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls set for October 28. The registration period commences on Monday, July 22.

While Comelec saw no reason to ban local officials from assisting their constituents, Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said they should remain outside the registration areas.

“If you want to help your constituents by bringing them to the registration center that’s fine but pagdating sa loob ng registration center huwag kayo makikialam, palalabasin po kayo,” he said.

Jimenez added that while the Comelec usually issues a resolution barring barangay officials from registration areas, the agency has yet to issue a similar ordinance for this registration period.

“At this point wala pa atang ganung resolution but certainly it’s a good rule of thumb na hindi dapat nangingialam ‘yung barangay official sa registration process,” Jimenez said.

Registrations for the barangay and SK polls will be held in all Offices of the Election Officer (OEOs) of the district, city or municipality where the voter resides.

Those eligible to register for the barangay polls are Filipino citizens 18 years old or older on election day, who have been residents of the Philippines for at least one year before the polls and a resident of the place where he intends to vote for at least six months immediately prior to election day.

On the other hand, for the youth polls, the registrant should also be a Filipino citizen at least 15 years old but less than 18 years old on election day.

Prospective voters should bring any official government-issued identification card.

Comelec is expecting at least 740,000 voters to register for the barangay elections and about two million voters for the SK. — PDC/BM, GMA News
