Korean media honor Ninoy Aquino for war coverage

Members of the Korean media on Friday honored the late Senator Benigno Aquino Jr. for his role in covering the Korean War.

 

During his two-day state visit in South Korea, President Benigno Aquino III received on behalf of his father a plaque of appreciation from the Korea Journalists Society and Korea War Correspondents Association.

 

Before this, the President also visited the War Memorial of Korea and offered a wreath of honor for the soldiers who died during the Korean War. Around 7,000 Filipino soldiers were sent to fight alongside the Koreans in the 1950s.

 

Aquino also spoke before the Korean business community earlier in the day.

 

"It was an opportunity for the President to highlight the administration’s thrust on good governance and sound economic management and to invite Korean CEOs to invest in the country; to assure them also that key reforms will continue even after the President’s term ends in 2016," deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said during a press conference at the Palace on Friday.

 

She said Aquino is also expected to separately meet with the chairman of Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Co. Limited.; the president and CEO of Korea Electric Power Corporation; the president and CEO of Hotel Lotte Co. Limited; the vice chairman and CEO of Hyundai Motor Group and KIA Motors Corp; and the chairman and CEO of the National Pension Service of Korea.

 

The President is also set to meet leaders and members of the Filipino community in Seoul, where there are approximately 87 Filipino organizations registered with the Philippine Embassy in South Korea.

 

During the meeting, he is expected to confer the Order of Lakandula on Representative Jasmine Bacurnay-Lee, the first naturalized Korean citizen to win a seat in the National Assembly.

 

Aquino will return to Manila on Friday night. —KG, GMA News
