Leyte and Samar islands still without power days after Yolanda super typhoon

Eight Visayas provinces remain without power days after super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) damaged at least 248 transmission towers and 198 electricity poles, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines said Tuesday.

With no power flowing from Luzon to the Visayas, the provinces of Leyte, Southern Leyte, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Capiz, Aklan, and Antique are without electricity, the NGCP said in an update made public via Twitter.

The NGCP said the “248 transmission towers and 198 poles are either toppled or broken, and 120 poles are leaning.”

It added that more than 60 percent of the damaged structures are on Panay Island in the Western Visayas.

The NGCP said all its facilities on the islands of Leyte and Samar are still out of commission and that its 350 kilovolt high voltage direct current line linking Leyte to Luzon is still cut.

Also offline from the power grid are one transmission line in Bohol, two on Negros Island and two substations on Panay Island.

Thirty line crews from Luzon were dispatched to the Visayas to repair the downed facilities.

The NGCP also said the Visayas grid is short of power capacity by 100 megawatts at peak demand. “As of November 12, the total capacity of the Visayas grid is 1058 MW with a peak demand of 1158MW.”  — ELR, GMA News
