NDRRMC: Yolanda death toll up to 3,982; damage at P11.737B

The death toll from super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) rose anew Tuesday morning, inching closer to the 4,000 mark, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.

In its 6 a.m. update, the NDRRMC said 3,982 had been reported dead, 18,266 injured and 1,602 missing.

At least 2,166,891 families or 10,047,652 people from 10,560 villages in 44 provinces had been affected.

Of these, 89,785 families or 418,988 people are staying in 1,595 evacuation centers.

A total of 295,590 houses have been destroyed and 301,650 others damaged.

Damage was estimated at P11,737,153,892.92, including P1,297,925,115 in infrastructure and P10,439,228,777.92 in agriculture.

Yolanda ravaged parts of the Visayas and Southern Luzon earlier this month.

The destruction it caused triggered massive international response to help those affected.

President Benigno Aquino III has been visiting affected areas since Sunday and indicated he wants to see more efficient assistance by government before he returns to Manila.

On Monday, Aquino said an investigation is ongoing on the local government units' handling of preparations and response to Yolanda, which slammed the Visayas region over a week ago and flattened many areas there.

“That is a matter that is subject of investigation," said Aquino in Alangalang, Leyte, when asked by reporters on whether the LGUs were prepared for Yolanda, the strongest typhoon to make landfall. — RSJ, GMA News
