NDRRMC: Yolanda death toll continues to rise, now at 5,759; damage surpasses P35B


The death toll from super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) rose further and reached 5,759 as of Thursday morning, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said.
 
In its 6 a.m. update, the NDRRMC also said Yolanda has so far caused 26,233 injuries even as 1,779 people remain missing.
 
Yolanda affected 2,379,399 families or 11,240,227 people in 12,095 villages in 44 provinces, displacing 873,061 families or 4,008,503 people, the NDRRMC report said.
 
Of these, 22,338 families or 96,674 people are staying in 410 evacuation centers.
 
The NDRRMC also said Yolanda has destroyed 599,121 houses and damaged 612,979 others.
 
Damage caused by Yolanda as of Thursday morning amounted to P35,239,886,330.67, including P18,206,735,334.29 in infrastructure and P17,033,150,996.38 in agriculture.
 
This included P1,184,264,800 in damage to health facilities, the NDRRMC said.
 
Communications
 
The NDRRMC said Smart Communications' cellular services were restored in more areas including Antique, Biliran, and Northern Samar.
 
Meanwhile, it added some P946,289,593.39 had been extended in terms of relief assistance to affected families. — RSJ, GMA News
