Revilla, aide detained at Camp Crame over pork barrel scam raps

(Updated 8:18 p.m.)  Senator Ramon "Bong" Revilla Jr. on Friday afternoon became the first of three senators to be detained on plunder and graft raps in connection with the P10-billion pork barrel scam.

The Philippine National Police brought Revilla to Unit One of the PNP Custodial Center from the PNP multipurpose hall, radio dzBB's Tuesday Niu reported.

Media representatives were blocked from running after the police vehicle that brought Revilla to the tightly secured detention facility.

Revilla arrived at Camp Crame on Friday afternoon a few hours after he surrendered to the Sandiganbayan in connection with the plunder and graft charges filed against him.

Revilla, one of the three senators accused in the pork barrel scam, underwent booking procedure at Camp Crame's multipurpose hall.

The senator also underwent physical and medical examination in the same hall.

PNP spokesman Chief Superintendent Reuben Theodore Sindac said an initial medical check of Revilla indicated he was "normal except for slightly high blood pressure."

He said Revilla's blood pressure was 140 over 90, with "no external sign of physical injury."

Free time with family

After undergoing booking procedures, Revilla was given some free time with his family, a report on radio dzBB said.

Sindac said visiting time for Revilla would be limited just like the other detainees.

First visitors

Eleven family members were the first to be allowed to visit Revilla at the custodial center.

The PNP allowed Revilla's wife, Rep. Lani Mercado, and children to enter the detention area even if it was beyond visiting hours, radio dzBB reported.

Visiting hours ran from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Revilla's loved ones had to deposit their mobile phones and electronic gadgets before entering, the report added.

Revilla's eldest son Bryan brought a black bag and a book the senator reportedly asked him to bring for the senator to read while in detention.

Family members of the senator earlier got a briefing from the PNP outside the custodial center.

Revilla surrendered to the Sandiganbayan before noon Friday after the anti-graft court signed a warrant for his arrest in connection with the alleged P10-billion pork barrel fund scam. He has repeatedly denied benefitting from the alleged scam.

Not alone

But Revilla will not spend his first night in detention at the Philippine National Police Custodial Center alone, after all.

On Friday evening, a member of his staff — and a co-accused in graft and plunder charges in connection with the P10-billion pork barrel scam — was detained at Camp Crame as well.

Lawyer Richard Cambe was brought to the custodial center at 7:30 p.m. after being processed at the office of the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group office, radio dzBB's Tuesday Niu reported.

It took 30 minutes to finish the processing of Cambe, who also surrendered to the Sandiganbayan earlier in the day.

However, the dzBB report said it was not immediately clear if Revilla and Cambe would be in adjacent detention facilities.

Other high profile detainees

Other high-profile detainees at the custodial center in Camp Crame include the recently arrested Khair Mundos, an alleged commander of the Abu Sayyaf Group; and couple Benito and Wilma Tiamzon, the alleged chair and financial officer respectively of the Communist Party of the Philippines.

Also detained in the facility are retired police officials involved in the alleged ghost repair of V-150s including former PNP chief Avelino Razon, former National Capital Region Police Office chief Geary Barias, retired police generals Charlemagne Alejandrino and Eliseo dela Paz.

Former policeman Rizal Alih, who was involved in the killing of a police general in the 1980s, and Jackson Dy, an alleged drug lord, are also kept at the Camp Crame facility.

The police officers allegedly involved in the Atimonan massacre and some policemen implicated in the Maguindanao Massacre are also detained in the custodial center. —Joel Locsin/KBK/NB/JDS, GMA News
