Gigi Reyes brought to Philippine Heart Center for chest pains

(Updated 9:09 p.m.) Lawyer Jessica Lucila "Gigi" Reyes was transferred to the Philippine Heart Center in Quezon City from the Taguig Pateros District Hospital on Friday evening after complaining of "persistent chest pains," radio dzBB's Nimfa Ravelo reported.

"An acute coronary event was considered and thus opted to transfer patient in Philippine Heart Center for further evaluation and management," said Dr. Prudencio Sta. Lucia, the hospital director.

Sta. Lucia said Reyes "complained of persistent chest pain which was accompanied by difficulty of breathing." He said anti-anginal medicine was administered but this "offered no relief".

According to the American Heart Association, acute coronary event or syndrome is "an umbrella term for situations where the blood supplied to the heart muscle is suddenly blocked."

A convoy brought Reyes out of the Taguig hospital.

"Pag sinabi ng doktor na kailangan siyang ilipat, meron naman pong emergency cases where they can decide [on] that matter," Jail Inspector Aries Villaester, spokesman of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, said in a GMA News flash report.

He added the Taguig facility didn't have the facilities to give Reyes the medical care she needed.

Reyes had been ordered detained at the city jail in Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig but was brought to the hospital soon after being brought there. She has asked the Sandiganbayan to transfer her to a tertiary hospital.

The heart center was one of the two tertiary hospitals she identified in her motion before the anti-graft court.  The other was the Sta. Ana Hospital in Manila.

Reyes said her attending physicians were connected with the two hospitals she mentioned. She said her cardiac condition and neurologic pathology status could be properly evaluated and addressed in those two hospitals.

She is the former chief of staff of Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile. Both are facing graft and plunder charges in relation to the P10-billion pork barrel scam.

Earlier Friday, Reyes did not attend her arraignment at the Sandiganbayan as she wasn't medically cleared to do so.

Brother thanks BJMP

Meanwhile, Reyes' brother, Patrick Gonzales thanked the BJMP for its swift action on the transfer of his sister to the Philippine Heart Center.

Gonzales confirmed that Reyes was suffering severe chest pain and difficulty in breathing.

“Having witnessed first hand the seizures, we thank the BJMP for their compassion and understanding,” Gonzales said in a text message sent to dzBB.

Gonzales also thanked the staff of Taguig hospital for extending to his sister all the medical remedies available.

“We also thank the doctors and medical staff of Taguig Hospital for attending to my sister with care. Thank you,” he said. — Joel Locsin and Elizabeth Marcelo/JDS/NB, GMA News
