Pinoy Muslims burn Danish flag over Mohammed caricatures

Some 600 Filipino Muslims on Wednesday burned the flag of Denmark in front of the Danish embassy in Makati City to condemn caricatures of Prophet Mohammed. The protesters, led by the Anak Mindanao party-list group, said the people responsible for the caricatures should be beheaded. Donning red and white headbands, the marchers vowed that they were ready to die for Mohammed. They assembled at around 9:30 a.m. near the Ninoy Aquino monument along Paseo de Roxas Street, marched to the PBCom building in Ayala Avenue where the embassy is located. Anak Mindanao party-list Rep. Hataman Mujiv reiterated his earlier call that Denmark must apologize for the alleged atrocity. Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, however, had declared that his government was not liable for the actions of an independent publication. The caricatures were first published in a small Norwegian Christian newspaper outside Denmark and reprinted in other newspapers in Bulgaria, France, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Spain, Switzerland, Hungary, New Zealand, Norway and Poland. Mohammed was depicted as wearing a turban shaped like a bomb. Under the Islamic faith, the revered prophet is never shown in any visual art, much less illustrated as a terrorist. Similar protests have also been staged in Manila’s Quiapo district and in Cotabato City, wherein they also burned flags of Denmark. Riots erupted Monday in two cities in Pakistan, with thousands of Muslims burning and vandalizing commercial buildings as a sign of their outrage over the caricatures.GMANEWS.TV, with report from inq7.net
