800 residents lose homes in Baclaran demolition

At least 800 residents were rendered homeless Thursday following the demolition of shanties at a Muslim community in the Baclaran area in southern Metro Manila Thursday. While the residents engaged the demolition team and their police escorts in a confrontation, they were eventually subdued and forced to pack their belongings as the demolition went on. Iglesia ni Cristo-run dzEC radio reported that the demolition job by the Philippine Reclamation Authority was completed before noon Thursday. The PRA, however, reiterated its assurance to the residents that it will not demolish their grand mosque. The residents took refuge in the mosque before dawn Thursday. Earlier, dzBB radio reported that at the height of the confrontation, residents threw stones at the demolition team, while truncheon-wielding policemen hit some of the residents. Some of the residents reportedly set fire to their own houses during the tension. Traffic near the area slowed considerably as motorists stopped to watch the unfolding drama. - GMANews.TV
