Iglesia ni Cristo members flock to PHL Arena for 101st anniversary

(Updated 9:42 a.m.) Members of the Iglesia ni Cristo on Sunday flocked to the Philippine Arena in Bulacan to mark the religious group's 101st anniversary.

Traffic on parts of the North Luzon Expressway was heavy Saturday night to early Sunday due to the number of vehicles heading to the Philippine Arena, radio dzBB reported.

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority chairman Francis Tolentino said in a dzBB radio interview that at least 2 million people attended the anniversary at the arena.

"Palagay ko milyon din iyon. Hindi nalalayo sa anibersaryo noong isang taon," Tolentino said.

He said that it may take between 2 and 3 hours to clear the traffic around the arena.

At least two million people attended the group's 100th anniversary last year.

The North Luzon Expressway posted photos of heavy traffic at Marilao and Meycauayan in Bulacan, and in Valenzuela City (northbound) due to vehicles entering the Philippine Arena as of 4:51 a.m.

It added the tailend of the vehicles reached three kilometers.

Also, radio dzBB's James Agustin said Counter-flow was allowed in some parts of NLEX to ease the traffic flow.

Photos by Agustin showed many of the group's members heading for the Philippine Arena before dawn Sunday.

Meanwhile, the NLEX said the high volume of motorists heading for the Philippine Arena and those illegally parking at NLEX are causing traffic congestion.

It said the plates of vehicles parked and abandoned at NLEX were being confiscated. "Towing is also ongoing," it added.

The Iglesia ni Cristo is currently embroiled in a controversy allegedly involving misuse of funds, which was made public recently when a video of a grandson of the group's founder Felix Manalo and a son of the late leader Erano Manalo claiming harassment and abductions.

One of the supposed causes of the controversy that rocked the century-old Iglesia ni Cristo is the construction of the largest indoor arena in the world – the Philippine Arena.

In an interview on Friday, Felix Nathaniel "Angel" Manalo, brother of Executive Minister Eduardo Manalo gave the public a glimpse into the power struggle within the group.

But the Iglesia ni Cristo council of leaders denied the allegations of abductions and expelled some members including Angel Manalo and his mother. — Joel Locsin/LBG/ALG, GMA News
