First round of oral arguments in PHL vs. China case at The Hague

The first round of oral arguments for the hearing on the Philippines' case against China's territorial claims began on Tuesday at the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague, Netherlands.

The representatives of the Philippines argued that China's nine-dash claim deprived Filipinos of fishing and exploration activities

The Philippine delegation was represented by Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario. The delegation is composed of representatives from all three branches of government: Executive, Legislative, and Judiciary.

China, meanwhile, continued to snubbed the hearings.

The Hague court ruled last month that it has immediate jurisdiction over seven out of 15 issues the Philippines raised against China. However, China rejected the court’s authority in the case and wants to deal with the issue bilaterally.

Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio previously said that the Hague court is likely to decide on the case mid-2016.

Below is a glimpse of how the first round of arguments unfolded, and what it was like during the jurisdictional hearing held in July 2015.
