Duterte assures he won't declare Martial Law

While he keeps on saying that he will use the police and the military to fight crime and drugs, presidential candidate Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said on Wednesday that he will not allow the police to abuse their power.

"Hindi ako papayag. Ako? Mag-abuso ang pulis? Unahin kita," he told reporters after his Rondaserye dialogue with urban poor women in Pasay City.

Duterte has been vocal about using the police and the military in figting crime and corruption. He even promised law enforcement officials that he will double their pay so they won't get involved in illegal activities.

The presidential aspirant has denied claims that such move is a prelude to Martial Law.

"Hindi Martial Law. Gamitin mo lang ang batas, hindi mo na kailangan maging diktador. Maraming batas, hindi nga lang sinusunod, not implemented," he said.

"Sabihin ko lang na sumunod kayo ng batas eh 'di lahat tayo okay na," he added.

His running mate Senator Alan Peter Cayetano added that those saying Duterte is for Martial Law are just trying to put the mayor in a bad light.

"Iyong mga nagkakalat ng Martial Law, iyon ang mga naninira at gusto mag-create ng fear," he said.

During their dialogue with urban poor women, the tandem presented their platforms and promised them that they will fight drugs, improve health services, solve high interest loans, which are problems presented by the Pasay residents during the meeting.

"It's epedemic eh [drug problem]. Kawawa ang Pilipino. It's threatening the stability of the nation and the next generation of Filipinos," Duterte said. —ALG, GMA News
