PILPINAS DEBATES 2016

VP bets agree PHL not doing enough to address climate change

Candidates for the country's second highest elective post believe the Philippines still has to do more to effectively address climate change.

All six candidates gave a negative answer when asked during the "Yes or No" portion of Sunday's vice presidential leg of the PiliPinas Debates 2016 if the country is doing enough to address the urgency of climate change, whose effects include strong typhoons and severe drought.

Massive tree-planting activity, logging ban and the modernization of forest and biodiversity protection efforts are among a slew of policies the Aquino administration has been pursuing since 2010.

Public consultations are also underway aimed at improving the draft of the climate change roadmap being finalized by the government, according to the Climate Change Commission.

“The Philippine NDC (Nationally Determined Contribution) Roadmap is premised on climate change mitigation as related to adaption because of the country’s vulnerability to the impacts of climate change. The NDC Roadmap will be pursued along with the guidelines and goals set by national strategies for sustainable development, low emission development and inclusive growth,” said Climate Change Commission vice chairperson and Secretary Emmanuel De Guzman in a statement last month.

Risk analysis firm Verisk Maplecroft earlier reported the Philippines as among the nations with the largest number of people in harm's way of natural hazards.

The report also showed that Metro Manila topped the list of mega cities with the highest number of people exposed to disasters such as storms.  — RSJ, GMA News
