Roxas seeks probe on 'Hello, Pappy' game show controversy

While it prepares to reopen the "Hello, Garci" wiretap investigation, the Senate may soon end up conducting a "Hello, Pappy" game show probe as well. Senator Manuel "Mar" Roxas II, chair of the Senate trade and commerce committee, on Thursday said he will propose an inquiry into the alleged game rigging on ABS-CBN Network's noon variety show, "Wowowee". However, Roxas quickly added that he will propose an investigation only after getting information from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and other concerned parties. The development came hours after Joey de Leon, host of rival show "Eat Bulaga," called upon lawmakers to conduct what he called was a "Hello, Pappy" probe. "Wowowee" is hosted by Willie Revillame, who goes by the nickname, "Pappy." De Leon and Revillame have been trading barbs over the past days. Roxas insisted that the probe was in aid of legislation. “We will look into this by first asking the DTI what are the complaints, who are the complainants, and what it has done and intends to do about this matter," Roxas said in a statement. The DTI is mandated to supervise the conduct of consumer promos, including game show segments. "Based on this information, we shall file an appropriate resolution for a Senate inquiry with the end-goal of strengthening our consumer welfare code," Roxas added. Roxas' statement read: "it was important to understand the nature of the alleged rigging involved, and the proper manner and venue in which to address this." During his message earlier in the day, De Leon called upon Revillame to first explain the alleged "irregularity" before "complaining." "Inuuna nyo yang 'Hello, Garci.' Bakit hindi niyo muna unahin itong 'Hello, Pappy' (You want to look into 'Hello, Garci' first. Why don't you investigate 'Hello, Pappy' before that)," De Leon said. Revillame previously expressed bitterness over how De Leon allegedly branded him as a cheat. Airing a response over "Wowowee," Revillame also on Thursday said that, "Hindi ko kailangan ng Senado. Kailangan ko mga totoong tao. Ang taong bayan ang kailangan ko (I don't need the Senate. What I need are the real people. I need the masses)." Eat Bulaga airs over GMA Network Inc.
