Aguirre to thousands of Duterte supporters: Sino gusto n’yo isunod?

"Sino ang gusto n'yo isunod?"

This was what Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II asked the crowd of President Rodrigo Duterte supporters at the Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park (formerly Luneta Park) in Manila on Saturday afternoon.

The crowd, estimated by the Manila Police District at 15,000 people strong, shouted back: "Trillanes!"

The smiling justice secretary then told the crowd: "Oh tulungan ninyo ako ha."

Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV is also a staunch critic of Duterte.

De Lima was arrested on drug charges on Friday and detained at the Philippine National Police's Custodial Center in Camp Crame, Quezon City.

The gathering of Duterte's supporters in Rizal Park is scheduled to last until Sunday.

In a directive sent to local government units, Interior Secretary Ismael Sueno "encouraged" them to attend the gathering at the Rizal Park on Sunday.

Simultaneous with the event, a large crowd mostly wearing yellow and black gathered the People Power Monument in Quezon City.

Some people at the People Power Monument expressed support to De Lima.

Asked to clarify, Aguirre said he will prosecute "whoever is guilty if there is evidence to support the charges."

He added: "It's the crowd who wanted it."

Trillanes had said the "primary objective" of De Lima's arrest was "to send a chilling message to the political opposition and critics that they could be next.

"Well, the effect to me is exactly the opposite. I am now motivated more than ever to expose him for being a plunderer and mass murderer that he truly is," the senator said in a statement on Friday.

Trillanes earlier revived the issue of Duterte's bank accounts, which he said amounted to P2 billion, in an attempt to disprove that the chief executive is not poor.

He also released details of alleged bank accounts of Duterte's family members.

Duterte shot back by accusing Trillanes of using his Senate post to ask for retainers from certain people and groups, which allegedly has become a "lucrative business" for the lawmaker. —with Virgil Lopez/ALG, GMA News
