'I AM NO LIAR'

Aguirre insists on ambush of Bilibid inmate's wife

Despite the absence of any police report, Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II on Monday insisted on the ambush of Lalaine Madrigal-Martinez, his informant in the alleged P100-million bribe try on high-profile inmates who testified against Senator Leila de Lima.

The Makati Police denied such incident took place, prompting the Department of Justice (DOJ) to release photos of Martinez's sport utility vehicle whose windshield located near the driver's seat was hit by a bullet.

The DOJ said Martinez was the source of the photo.

Martinez, meanwhile, was seen alighting from the vehicle in another photo.

Following Aguirre's order over the weekend, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) sent a ballistics expert and chemist to conduct a forensic examination on the vehicle.

Initial examination showed the trajectory of the bullet came from above while three bullet fragments were found in the vehicle, the NBI said.

"The ambush is real. I am no liar," Aguirre said in a statement.

Aguirre said there was no official report on the incident because Martinez did not tell it to the police.

"Actually ang report niya sa telepono lang. Tinawagan lang kami, in-ambush daw siya. Hinintay niya raw yung pulis. Siguro nagbago ang isip nag-self medication na lang dun sa kapatid niya," he told reporters.

"Apparently, hindi na siya nagpa-imbestiga," Aguirre added.

Aguirre also could not say if the alleged ambush was related to the bribery issue.

Martinez was supposedly ambushed early Friday at the Sta. Ana racetrack, currently known as the Circuit Makati, a day after Aguirre told the media that former Senator Jamby Madrigal and Laguna Rep. Marlyn Alonte-Naguiat were behind the P100-million offer for inmates to retract their testimonies against De Lima on or before February 25.

Both Madrigal and Alonte have denied Aguirre's claims.

Martinez is the wife of Noel Martinez, one of the high-profile inmates detained at Camp Aguinaldo whose testimonies were used by the DOJ as basis in filing drug-related cases against De Lima before the Muntinlupa City Regional Trial Court.

De Lima is now under police detention after Judge Juanita Guerrero of the Muntinlupa City RTC Branch 204 ordered her arrest. She has already challenged the legality of her arrest before the Supreme Court.

Also arrested and in detention are De Lima's co-accused, former Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) officer-in-charge Rafael Ragos and her former driver-bodyguard Ronnie Dayan.  —KBK, GMA News
