Matobato lawyer to file case vs. Duterte at the International Criminal Court

The legal counsel of self-confessed hitman Edgar Matobato will file a case against President Rodrigo Duterte on crimes against humanity before the International Criminal Court (ICC).

GMA News' Raffy Tima reported that Atty. Jude Sabio is set to file the case in the coming weeks.

The statement was issued after his client surfaced on Thursday and posted bail for frustrated murder case, which stemmed from the complaint filed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) last January in relation to the October 23, 2014 ambush of agrarian reform adjudicator Abeto Salcedo Jr.

Matobato denied the charges, telling a Senate inquiry last October that he was under the DOJ's Witness Protection Program when the incident took place.

There are no details of the case that Sabio plans to file. However, in recent years President Duterte had been linked to the Davao Death Squad, but he has denied his involvement in the group's creation and its activities.

The current administration has also been criticized by human rights groups for its brutal war against drugs. — Anna Felicia Bajo/BAP, GMA News
