BFAR imposes shellfish ban in parts of Visayas


The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) on Wednesday warned the public that all types of shellfish caught in some coastal areas of Western Samar, Bohol, and Masbate were not safe for human consumption.

In an advisory, the BFAR said "shellfish collected at coastal waters of Daram Island in Western Samar; coastal waters of Dauis and Tagbilaran City in Bohol and coastal waters of Milagros in Masbate are still positive for paralytic shellfish poison that is beyond regulatory limit."

The BFAR also said fish, squids, shrimps and crabs are safe for human consumption provided that they are "fresh and washed thoroughly" and internal organs such as gills and intestines were removed before cooking.

Meanwhile, the following coastal waters were declared free from toxic red tide:

  • Cavite, Las Piñas, Parañaque, Navotas, Bulacan and Bataan (Mariveles, Limay, Orion, Pilar, Balanga, Orani, Abucay, and Samal) in Manila Bay;
  • Bolinao, Anda, Alaminos, Sual and Wawa, Bani in Pangasinan;
  • Masinloc Bay in Zambales;
  • Mandaon in Masbate;
  • Juag Lagoon in Matnog and Sorsogon Bay in Sorsogon;
  • Honda and Puerto Bays in Puerto Princesa City and Inner Malampaya Sound in Taytay, Palawan;
  • Pilar, Panay, President Roxas, Roxas City in Capiz and Sapian Bay (Ivisan and Sapian in Capiz; Mambuquiao and Camansi in Batan, Aklan);
  • Altavas, Batan and New Washington in Batan Bay, Aklan;
  • E.B. Magalona, Pontevedra, Pulupandan, Valladolid, Talisay City, Silay City, Bacolod City, Hinigaran, Cadiz City, Victorias City, Bago City, Binalbagan and San Enrique in Negros Occidental;
  • Matarinao Bay in Eastern Samar;
  • Cambatutay, Maqueda, Irong-Irong and Villareal Bays in Western Samar;
  • San Pedro, Carigara and Cancabato Bays in Tacloban CIty;
  • Calubian and Leyte in Leyte
  • Biliran province
  • Dumanquillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur;
  • Tantanang Bay in Zamboanga Sibugay;
  • Murcielagos Bay in Zamboanga del Norte and Misamis Occidental;
  • Taguines Lagoon in Benoni Mahinog, Camiguin Island;
  • Balite Bay in Mati, Davao Oriental;
  • Hinatuan, Bislig and Lianga Bays in Surigao del Sur and
  • Gigantes Islands in Carles, Iloilo
