PAGASA eyes revising public storm signal warnings

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) is looking to change the Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals (TCWS) based on wind speeds to focus on weather disturbances' effects on the public.

"Hindi tayo ngayon magfofocus doon sa wind speed. And ifofocus natin ngayon ay yung impacts. So we are now revising," Dr. Esperanza Cayanan, PAGASA Weather Division chief said during a press conference.

"Ito yung bibigyan natin ngayon ng emphasis 'pag nagiissue tayo ng warning signals. Iisa isahin natin yung mga ano ba ang mangyayari sa lugar," Cayanan added.

Cayanan said the public usually disregard PAGASA's weather bulletin due to its technicalities. This then prompted them to revise warning signals in order to reach more people.

"Hindi daw kasi binabasa ngayon 'pag may inissue kaming bulletin. Yung signal one tapos areas lang. Meron kasi kaming maraming impacts of the wind na nakasulat doon sa bulletin mukhang hindi nakakarating doon sa tao yung pagbabasa sa dulo," she added.

The proposed revision is set to be tackled on Monday with PAGASA's executive staff.

"So what we are proposing which is for the approval of the executive staff numbers eto yung mga impacts but more nakatutok sa key ares o sectors. Ano ano yung maapektuhan - power, kunwari mga closing of roads tsaka due to damaged bridges - 'yun ang ilalagay namin doon," Cayanan said. —NB, GMA News
