Robredo in California: Fil-Ams should help poor Filipinos

Vice President Leni Robredo traveled to Los Angeles, California this weekend to meet with some members of the Filipino-American community there.

Robredo was a guest at the fundraising gala of the Filipino American Symphony Orchestra (FASO), held at the Mary Pickford Estate on Sunday (Manila time).

FASO said the invite-only fundraising event was meant to help “sustain concerts and music education programs.” The event had been advertised as early as April.

Before flying to the United States, Robredo had led the Independence Day rites in Rizal Park in Manila last Monday, which came as President Rodrigo Duterte took several days off for “private time.”

In her speech at the gala, the Vice President reiterated the importance of helping the country’s less fortunate, which she said her office aims to do through its flagship program, Angat Buhay.

She zeroed in on the need to address malnutrition and hunger, “silent crises” that she said leads to 95 child deaths a day.

The Vice President also mentioned the situation in Marawi City, the center of ongoing clashes between government troops and the Maute local terror group.

“We just recently concluded our relief operations for families in the evacuation sites in Iligan, Cagayan de Oro, and Marawi. As we speak, our soldiers are still in battle and families have not been able to return to their homes,” she said.

“The local government unit of Marawi continues to call for donations of Halal-certified food items, malongs, breastmilk, water and water filters, as well as psychosocial intervention for the holistic healing of our brothers and sisters affected by the conflict in Marawi,” she added.

Robredo also underscored the need to focus on unifying “in the face of diversity” amid the “extraordinary times,” in the Philippines and elsewhere, noting the “global power shifts that are causing massive changes everywhere.”

During her visit in LA, Robredo also met with Filipinos residing there, notably those from her home region, Bicol. — Rose-An Jessica Dioquino/JST, GMA News
