ONE YEAR AFTER HAGUE RULING

DFA says PHL's approach to South China Sea issue 'led to great benefits'

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Wednesday lauded the Philippines' improved ties with China, saying its current approach to the South China Sea problem has "led to great benefits for the country."

"The Philippine approach has led to great benefits for the country, allowing us considerable economic gains as well as strengthening our status as ASEAN Chair and regional peacemaker," the DFA said in a statement on the first anniversary of the Philippines' legal victory against China over the South China Sea issue.

"Through the adoption of positive neighbourly relations, our fishermen are back exercising their livelihood in Scarborough Shoal," the DFA added. "We have received investment and financial assistance commitments upwards of USD30 Billion from our partners in the region."

China claims most of the energy-rich South China Sea, through which about $5 trillion worth of trade passes each year. Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam also have claims to parts of the sea.

Manila scored a historic legal victory last year — in a case lodged by the Aquino administration — when The Hague-based Permanent Court of Arbitration ruled to invalidate China's nine-dash line claim that virtually covers the entire South China Sea.

The election of President Rodrigo Duterte in the May 9 elections, however, saw a dramatic U-turn in his country's approach as he sought to downplay the ruling. Duterte has said repeatedly he wants to avoid confrontation with China and sees no need to press it to abide by the ruling.

In its statement, the DFA said although the Duterte administration "reaffirms its unwavering commitment to protect our country’s territorial claims and maritime entitlements," it "believes that the ongoing territorial dispute in the West Philippine Sea should further be resolved in a manner consistent with the spirit of good neighbourly relations."

"The Philippines shall remain an enemy to none and a friend to all in its pursuit of economic and political benefits for the country, including the long-term security and stability in the region," the DFA added. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
