NPA planning to attack Davao before SONA – PNP chief

Philippine National Police chief Director General Ronald dela Rosa on Monday said they have received information that the New People’s Army (NPA) is planning to attack Davao before the second State of the Nation Address of President Rodrigo Duterte.

“Meron lang kaming namonitor dun sa kabila, sa kaliwa, sa NPA that they will make some pre-SONA attacks, harassment sa Davao na-uncover ‘yan. Guguluhin nila yung Davao before SONA,” Dela Rosa said in a press conference after the PNP flag ceremony.

“We are preparing for that,” he added.

The PNP chief said they have not monitored any other threat but they are not discounting the possibility. “Hindi natin madi-discount (ang possibility), pero sa ngayon walang specific kaming natanggap, namonitor na terror attack,” he said.

He asked the public to cooperate with authorities in ensuring peace and order in their communities.

“Sana naman magcooperate ‘yung public na we are facing some degree of threats so mag-adjust sana ang publiko na magtulungan tayo para mabantayan natin ang katahimikan ng ating paligid,” he said.

Government efforts to reach a peace agreement with the rebel groups are continuous, according to the PNP chief.

“Our quest for peace is never ending. Kung ma-achieve natin ang peace talks mas maganda. Pero kung hindi sila sinsero, wala tayong magawa kung hindi sila sinsero. Giyera, ganon talaga. Hard realities in life,” he said

The result of the talks still depends on the rebel groups, Dela Rosa said. The police will always do its duty to protect the people, he added.

“Ewan ko kung susunod ba sila kanilang hari-hari doon sa abroad kung anong sasabihin, kung kontrolado pa nila, susunod. Hindi naman tayo pupuwedeng hindi tayo lalaban kung merong peace talk. Pag tayo ay inatake, we have to fight,” he said. — VDS, GMA News
