3 Customs employees under probe after being caught taking bribes

Three employees of the Bureau of Customs (BOC) are in hot water after being caught by closed-circuit cameras taking bribes in exchange for processing documents.

The BOC's command center has been eyeing the suspects for four months, according to Jun Veneracion's exclusive report on GMA news program "24 Oras" Monday evening.

Ferdinand Cacas, who heads the monitoring of the BOC's 400 CCTV cameras, said they spotted several instances where the employees received bribes from brokers.

"Naging kalakaran na nu'ng tatlong personality na ito. Nagiging obligasyon na ng broker na magbigay ng padulas para siguro mas mabilis 'yung proseso ng papel nila," Cacas said.

Deputy Commissioner Gerardo Gambala said the three employees are now facing a probe.

"At kung sila'y mapatunayan na talagang kakutsaba talaga sila sa mga maling ginagawa dito sa bureau, of course they should be punished," Gambala said.

He added that the command center proves that most BOC employees are honest, with the few rotten apples spoiling their reputation.

"Dito napapatunayan na marami rin tayong empleyado na gumagawa ng mabuti," Gambala said.

"Ang problema lang ay nadadamay lang sila sa mga hindi gumagawa ng mabuti," he added.

But according to a GMA News source, bribery inside the Customs offices are rare these days because of the CCTV cameras.

Instead, the bribery happens outside the offices. —Margaret Claire Layug/JST, GMA News
