PPCRV supports postponement of Barangay, SK polls

The Church-based poll watchdog is in favor of the postponement of Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections, according to a post on the Catholic Bishops' conference of the Philippines (CBCP) news website.

"The situation in Marawi plus its spill-over effect on the whole of Mindanao justify postponement of barangay elections in Marawi and Mindanao," said Rene Sarmiento, Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) chairman.

He added that the declaration of martial law and the suspension of the privilege of habeas corpus "are not motivational and encouraging conditions for the holding of  elections."

Earlier, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said it is considering the postponement of the barangay and SK elections in Mindanao and has set a public hearing on Aug. 15.

Ozamiz Archbishop Martin Jumoad, however, said elections must be postponed only in conflict areas.

"Election is a must. In a democratic society, the people must choose their leaders," he said.

"If there are areas which are not peaceful then postpone the election. But election as scheduled must proceed," he added. — BAP, GMA News
