Pimentel urged to help reverse ‘unreasonable’ 10-day notice to visit De Lima

Members of the minority bloc have sought the help of Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III to reverse the Philippine National Police's 10-day notice requirement to visit detained Senator Leila de Lima.

In a letter dated August 30, Minority Leader Franklin Drilon and Senators Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan, Paolo Benigno “Bam” Aquino IV, Antonio Trillanes IV, and Risa Hontiveros requested Pimentel’s “assistance in seeking a reversal” of what they called an “unreasonable and impractical” requirement.

The letter was sent Monday, September 4.

“We hope that Senate President Pimentel will be able to follow through on his previous assertions of the Senate’s independence which includes ensuring his colleagues in the Senate are provided with their rights and are able to fulfill their constitutional mandate even while incarcerated,” Pangilinan said in a statement.

“Senator De Lima’s performance of her duties and functions as duly elected Senator of the country should not be hindered by stringent visitation requirements,” he said.

De Lima, Pangilinan said, should be accessible to her colleagues who may wish to discuss legislative matters with her.

Pangilinan also wrote to PNP chief Director General Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa asking for clarification regarding the matter.

He said they were not given a formal notification of the 10-day notice requirement, and that it was not required during previous visits. — BM, GMA News
