PNA reaps criticisms anew after editor's orders make headlines

After a social media backlash and a congressional inquiry into its errors online, the Philippine News Agency again became the subject of scrutiny on Friday after netizens posted apparent headlining mistakes on its website.

Some articles dated between January and April 2017 were posted with titles containing what read like notes from an editor.

“Lei, reangle this. focus on link between skin diseases and toxic waste. for foto get a picture of marcopper mining,” the headline of an article about mining in MIMAROPA region read. It was posted on April 26, 2017.

“(April 12: Dear Ma’m LAP: This was not posted but was submitted in summary and sent yesterday. Ano kaya ang problem ng story?—GVR) (LEG),” another article posted on April 12, 2017 read.

At least eight old stories were published with these little notes.

These articles were found a few weeks after the public caught a series of gaffes of the PNA including the use of Dole Philippines’ logo instead of the Department of Labor and Employment’s in a story about pay rules.

The incident prompted Presidential Communications Operations Office Sec. Martin Andanar to create an editorial board to ensure the quality of the PNA's articles.

Andanar, meanwhile, said in a text message that Undersecretary Joel Egco would issue a statement on the latest PNA gaffe.
