Ex-Customs chief Faeldon to be taken into Senate custody

Former Customs Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon will be taken into Senate custody after he failed to appear on time for the blue ribbon committee hearing on the P6.4-billion shabu shipment smuggled in from China Monday.

“The agreement was that he would appear and if he does not appear, he would have to be taken into custody and arrested,” Senator Richard Gordon, chairman of the blue ribbon committee, said.

“We will place him here in custody of the Senate for further disposition later on. Let the record so state,” Gordon said.

This was the decision of Gordon after Faeldon failed to show up on time for the 9 a.m. hearing.

Faeldon was cited in contempt by the committee last week. The contempt citation with arrest order was issued on him last Friday.

Faeldon on Friday said he will attend but will not participate in the Senate hearing.

He said he would rather go to jail than subject himself to the questions of the senators who use their privilege speech to malign innocent persons. He also said he no longer believes some senators can remain impartial during the rest of the proceedings.  —KG/KVD, GMA News
