5 dead, 6 missing due to Maring —NDRRMC


Five people have been confirmed killed and six more are still missing following the onslaught of Tropical Storm Maring in Luzon, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said Wednesday.

“Nakakalungkot na bagama’t hindi napakalakas ng bagyong Maring, may limang confirmed fatalities dahil sa bagyong ito," NDRRMC spokesperson Mina Marasigan said.

Marasigan said among the fatalities were Jude and Justine Pundal, aged 17 and 14, who both died in a landslide in Taytay, Rizal; 12-year-old Samantha Zamora, who drowned in Pasay City; and a two-month-old baby who died after a riprap collapsed collapsed onto their home in Lucena City.

The fifth fatality was from Silang, Cavite, she said.

Marasigan said a total of 2,103 families or 8,793 people were affected by the storm in 109 barangays in Metro Manila and Calabarzon.

She said 1,857 families or 7,594 persons have been transferred to 116 evacuation centers while 96 families or 389 persons are being served outside evacuation centers.

She also reported that nine houses were damaged in Silang, Cavite, three of which were totally destroyed.

The NDRRMC said a total of 169 areas were reported flooded in metro Manila and Central Luzon at the height of the cyclone, and 139 areas remain submerged in floodwaters. —ALG, GMA News
