PHL-US counterterrorism drill set for mid-September

A bilateral, interagency counterterrorism drill between Philippines and United States troops to augment the capacity of both countries to "rapidly plan, coordinate, and conduct counterterrorism operations."

The drill dubbed Temple Wind, which is scheduled in mid-September in the Philippines and Hawaii, is "designed to create a realistic environment to exercise counterterrorism strategy, including senior decision-making and tactical responses, while deepening the bilateral partnership."

Aside from military drills, both countries will undergo "additional military assessments, national level engagement, and subject matter expert exchanges" in an effort to highlight the "enduring commitment" of both countries to their alliance.

"The United States is a proud ally of the Philippines and will continue to provide support and assistance to Philippine counterterrorism efforts and work jointly to address shared threats to the peace and security of both countries," the US Embassy in Manila said in a statement on Friday.

The US military recently deployed a drone to Mindanao to support the Philippines' counter-terrorism efforts in the ongoing Marawi crisis in addition to providing additional $15 million or about P730 million for rehabilitation and rescue efforts. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
